Who inspires you? I was recently asked this question, and found myself re-inspired by these unique individuals when drafting my list of nominees for our first annual TODAY Style Heroes list. They are all fearless originals each with a signature style all their own.
IRIS APFEL & THE LADIES OF ADVANCED STYLE … Ilona Royce Smithkin, Joyce Carpati, & Ruth Kobin to name a fewAri Seth Cohen’s must-visit blog Advanced Style features photographs of stylish women over the age of 60 and beyond that prove you really can wear that! There is an obsession with perfection, specifically numbers when it comes to what we wear – “if I was 10 years younger, 20 pounds thinner or 3 inches taller” – and these ladies exemplify not only how to have fun with fashion but how to embrace who you are, as is.
She was street style before street style. Timeless 24/7. Feathers, hats, sequins, suits, canes, and capes… Her style has transcended her role as a 70′s fashion icon. Vintage photos of her still embody the epitome of effortless, sexy, chic, edgy, and cool all at the same time.
Gwen’s ability to be both daring and darling at once mesmerizes. She’s shared her vulnerability through lyrics, while rocking every risk imaginable from punk hair to harajuku style. No one seems to balance uber girly frills and tomboy rebel better. She’s the ultimate mix master, and sweetest badass.
Strong, smart, and stylish… The ‘quotable queen’ left us with words to live by. A few of my favorites:
“You gotta have style. It helps you get down the stairs. It helps you get up in the morning. It’s a way of life. Without it, you’re nobody. I’m not talking about lots of clothes. “
“The first rule that a geisha is taught, at the age of nine, is to be charming to other women… Every girl in the world should have geisha training.”
“A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”
